dozen community based aphasia centers in the country Voices of Hope for Aphasia is making an impact in the Tampa Bay area Aphasia is a disorder that causes a loss of the ability to understand or use language This condition often follows a stroke or injury that damages the portion of the brain that processes language Over 2 million Americans have aphasia yet only about 9 of Americans can identify it as a language disorder People with aphasia tend to withdraw and self isolate Their inability to communicate also creates barriers to health care services and causes difficulties for the person with aphasia and their loved ones Mike Caputo created Voices of Hope for Aphasia as a place where people with aphasia and their families can engage in life and build a social network What began as meetings in a small office once a week expanded to comprehensive social and support programs offered five days a week in St Petersburg Dunedin South Tampa and online When members discover Voices of Hope for Aphasia it can be life changing Longtime member John Dingman said I would just sit and listen before Voices of Hope for Aphasia The programs have made him more confident independent and ready to initiate conversation When asked about his favorite part of Voices of Hope for Aphasia John responded Everything I could be here all day every day Read the full story PinellasCF org CALL Despite aphasia s prevalence and devastating impact reaching new members and raising funds remains a challenge for Voices of Hope for Aphasia making community support essential to its success Photo by Vera Opportunity Act of 1964 the Pinellas Opportunity Council was established to facilitate the financial security and general welfare of Pinellas County citizens Since its founding the council has grown substantially and it now offers six programs and mobilizes millions of dollars into the local community In 2018 a generous and anonymous donor entrusted Pinellas Community Foundation as the philanthropic partner of a donor advised fund inspired by the concept of venture capital investment The council s programs address the community s most pressing needs and solve financial insecurity issues from the roots up Pattye Sawyer executive director at Pinellas Opportunity Council explains the importance of education and financial literacy Rather than encouraging individuals to rely on the council it promotes self sufficiency Generational wealth is not just financial It s also educational It s also emotional says Pattye While the council offers relief to eligible citizens it focuses on equipping individuals with tools to achieve success independently Pattye explains that individuals aren t counting on us every month rather they are acquiring the skills they need These skills include building credit balancing a checkbook and creating plans for the future Pattye notes that through education people can become self sufficient and pass that knowledge on to their children maintaining that building a well rounded community starts with families As the housing crisis in Pinellas County grows Pattye reminds us that funding is always the council s biggest challenge Though the council s partnership with Pinellas Community Foundation provides flexible funding to be used as needed it s not enough to cover everything especially the programs administrative costs Read the full story PinellasCF org POC Behind the Fund Origins The fund s objective was to direct support toward smaller grassroots nonprofit organizations by investing in their missions without fear of risk an approach known as trust based philanthropy Since it began the PCF Social Justice Fund PCFSJF has awarded more than 35 nonprofits with capacity building support services training and more than 700 000 in monetary support The fund focuses on organizations working around issues of injustice and equity and has expanded awareness of its impact among community donors financial advisors and industry peers The PCFSJF founder began searching for a way to leverage his small gifts into a larger community effort As he spoke with the philanthropic community he found hesitation to commit to organizations without a long track record Since smaller startups are able to make a big difference with less money he created the PCF Social Justice Fund to help them build a track record so they can compete for larger grants The PCF Social Justice Fund was designed to be a big umbrella for many people who can make a small difference so that they can come together through a central infrastructure It was created to take advantage of PCF s tremendous human capital while freeing it from past bureaucratic obstacles to serving smaller nonprofits In celebration of the achievements of the Pinellas Community Foundation Social Justice Fund we interviewed the founder to learn more about his personal story his philosophy of giving back and his vision for the future Read the full story PinellasCF org
